We're heading for the coast for a rainy weekend getaway! Our friend Sarah reserved a house for the Newport Seafood etc. fest that's happening all weekend. It should be crazy and fun. I'm bringing my Book Club book, and my first crack at embroidery for the Tie One On challenge. We'll see how much gets done, but I'd love to do a little relaxing and a little crazy/fun time.

This morning a friend directed me to the Portland Mamas Inc. page where I found some great local biz.s to bookmark for the future. This one caught my eye first:
Sew, Mama, Sew ...Always a sucker for fabric.
And I finished my first trim box a la All Buttoned Up. I graduated (I think)! Everything looks great except there's a little extra loose fabric on the inside. Hmm. I'm gonna try tacking it down. On to media boxes, desk organizer boxes, and button boxes.

Finally

New Shades, originally uploaded by apkoski.
I finished something I started - wooo! Okay, I still have to finish up the matching tea cozy, coasters, and hand towels, but I figured you'd gag if I posted all of that at once anyway.

This is an idea I got from somebody's Blog - remind me whose, if you've seen it. I finished the edges and hid the seam lines on both sides with either ribbon or bias tape. That way when it's open, it still looks pretty! It worked great except I installed the hooks uncomfortably close to the ceiling, and made the loops too small. I broke into a sweat yesterday trying open it to a triangle. Maybe small magnets would work.
Anyhoo, I'm pretty pleased with the results, which is good, since I live here and all.

Hearts, Swirls, and Green

Greenback?
Nope.

Green around the gills?
Hopefully not for a while again.

Green in the Garden! That's right, spring is right around the corner here - stuff is popping up (which is good, because I forget what I stuck where last fall). Boy its been a long time since I've gardened!
Paul & I checked out plants at Home Depot this weekend - they're looking better now than they ever will for the rest of the year. I felt frenzied to get some good ones before everybody else in SE realized that they should be doing the same. The shrubs were pretty unappealing, but a couple specimen trees really caught my eye: Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, and The Salix discolor (AKA Pussy Willow). Unfortunately, they both carry a hefty price tag ($50 - $75). I am particularly in love with the Pussy Willow, because they remind me of the one we used to have in the side yard at my growing up house. Anyway, on to the hearts and swirls.

As you know, today is the overblown holiday of Valentine's Day (which oddly, usually comes out of my mouth as, "Thanksgiving.") Paul & I ruefully comply, citing that we could just do this on our own whenever we feel like it. So tonight we'll exchange little gifts, cards, and kisses (aw,) and we'll enjoy it, damn it.

'Swirls' refers to the design I toothpicked into the marshmallows I made for my Baby Boot Camp moms today. I wanted to bring them something sweet in honor of the holiday, without causing them to hold contempt for me. So I gave them each a marshmallow, recommending that they find a moment in the future to enjoy it (quietly, if possible) with/in a cup of hot chocolate. Mmmmm... they are awesome in hot chocolate - especially at a ratio of 1:1.

Happy V-Day

Me & Martha

In Bloom, originally uploaded by apkoski.

As I stood in line at Home Depot yesterday, I flipped to the Martha Stewart Living Table of Contents (by chance) and spotted something interesting listed for p.49. It was a tutorial on how to force bloom flowering perennials.
"Ah-ha," I say to Paul, "Look how hip I am." (And as Liles pointed out, I ruined it by saying 'hip.')
That very morning I had pulled from my basement a vase of carefully-tended force-bloomed Flowering Quince out of my neighbor's overflowing tree. Today they started to bloom. How nice. :)

Oh yeah... Foot

Okay, so my last post began with a clean yet risqué photo of Gatsby enjoying his belly, feet in the air. Feet in the air. Then I included a short summary of Gatsby's hellacious week (2 weeks ago) that included 5 trips to the vet and 11 evenly-spaced pukes (on the carpet every time, go figure) that included the toys listed below. Sticking with the foot theme, the remainder of the post would have, in cleverly worded fashion, explained the cruel butt-kicking that I then incurred last week. I got the 'kid flu,' AKA the stomach flu Wednesday night into Friday (no, I didn't puke on the carpet - I'm well-trained).
Unfortunately, that part was missing from my last post. It was because the store-brand NyQuil started
kicking in right about the time I got to it. Earlier in the day, I had traded in my watered-down carbohydrate-electrolyte solution for some "Liquid Sleep." That morning I awoke to a sore, swollen throat and a plugged right nostril, which was giving me deja-vu. Oh, Paul's Superbowl cold! That's right, I got kicked while I was down. Why not just get the flu immediately followed by a nice little cold. Why Not?! It's a two-fer -- more is better -- the American way. I knew I shouldn't have bragged, "I haven't been sick since 2005." La-ti-da.
(I know, "Boo-hoo, hoo," "world's smallest violin," etc. This post is for entertainment purposes only - not your sympathy.)

One more thing: the PSU Wellness Fair is done - kick butt!
*The sign for it was not puke green as it appears above, but rather the near-chartreuse, similar to what you see on my sidebars.

All About The Foot

Bath, originally uploaded by apkoski.

Last week was a big week for the Great Gatsby. He swallowed 2 catnip toys, 2 hair bands, and another unknown object. Mr. G. Love spent the better part of the week at the vet, where he's become a legend of sorts - clawing and biting anyone who came close. Kung Fu Kitty. What's more impressive were his intense cries, scowls, and growls. The G events culminated last Saturday with a trip to a specialist who determined that whatever was stuck in his secum all week was now gone. Big sigh, followed by, "Little Bastard." He's got 6 lives left...

Challenge #2

Snowy Pine Pincushion, originally uploaded by apkoski.

This is my entry for the Pincushion Challenge. Dec/Jan challenge was "Winter Wonderland," and I socked out my version of it: a felt snowy pine tree. (There were plenty of examples around here.) I can't wait to see it posted on Flickr with other peoples' interpretations.
Wahoo, I met the challenge! Tack this onto my Tie One On experience points. I'm no longer a Challenge Virgin.

Delurking Me, belated

So last week I found out that 2 or 3 weeks ago was "De-lurking Week." I learned that this typically occurs by" simply" leaving a comment on any given writer's page that you occasionally visit - or even have bookmarked. It can also happen in the grass-roots form - by Blogging about yourself, which is what I'm in the process of doing here. I'm sort of a progressive project person, so my goal is to hit this topic regularly, rather than all in one week. Here's an image of me for starters, which hopefully says a little about me without actually saying anything.
1. I have some weird food loves. I love (love, love, love) the taste of mayonnaise. Also, a peanut butter and pickle sandwich is good. Chocolate covered marshmallows are available for almost every holiday (hearts, trees, pumpkins, eggs -- dry spell between May & Aug).
2. I edit my e-mails... sometimes more than once.

Darwin Awards, Pinball, and other Trivia

Kitty Accessible, originally uploaded by apkoski.

Every evening our little happy furry family crams & wedges ourselves onto the bed for a nice cozy sleep. This morning we awoke to a light dusting, the result of a regular Portland mist combined with abnormal sub-zero temps. Paul caught the 5:53 to Downtown as usual, and I did my normal AM routine consisting of kitchen duty, coffee, and e-mail correspondence. Then I e-mailed my mom to tell her about the impending "snow storm," remembering last week's buildup to a 'Winter Storm,' that left a teeny layer of the white fluffy stuff, and ensuing over-freak-outedness (mostly on the media's part). I scoff.

THEN pandemonium did occur. It snowed buckets (which translates to about 4 inches) between 8-ish and 10-ish. All the major roads were jammed - trucks jackknifed, cars abandoned, people playing bumper cars (*see video), buses getting stuck. Chains/studs were required for driving, since there's no (nearly) plows and salt trucks. THEN it got worse. Local news channels held "Continuous Extended Coverage" for hours into the day, people drove the streets towing their kids on sleds, four-wheeling fools tore up the parks, and hardly anybody shoveled their walks!

It wasn't all pandemonium though. Our tween neighbors and other neighborhood youngsters & dogs got outside and played in the snow throughout the afternoon. Folks reportedly broke out the kayaks & sleds on Mt. Tabor. I got outside and played in the snow! We all got at least part of the day off! And, because there aren't enough trucks to get rid of the snow, we get another (at least) half day off tomorrow. Yahoo!

Found: Favorite Shirt

I never would have believed it. A year and 4 months has passes since I started whining about a new shirt that I couldn't find. Now, this shirt had special significance. For one thing, it was my very my first purchase since we moved to Portland, less food, rent, and gas (which our friendly local federal government was reimbursing us for at the time). It was a guilty buy, as we were reeling a little from not-yet reimbursed moving expenses, and from dropping down to a single income. Saved by a loophole, I had bought the shirt to wear to a job interview.
The shirt was very soft, had elastic in many odd locations, and bore a pleasant but not peasant-y turquoise and blue flower print. It was cute-cute, a ruffly, stretchy, sophisticated thing that was displayed with Easter Sunday in mind. I couldn't remember the last time I'd owned anything so un-tomboyish, and I thought all that elastic made me look pretty good. Anyway, back to the matter at hand.

"Have you seen it?"

I'd ask Paul. Of course not. What man knows the whereabouts of all his wife's clothing? On occasion I pined for the thing, especially when such requisite apparel was appropriate. Then winter came and I forgot about the shirt. Another summer went by (2006), and I thought of the thing a few times, wondering if I could ever bring myself to move on and seek out a worthy replacement. When the fall rolled around again, I was over it. No more super-cute shirt. There will be others; just give it time (not so pretty and not quite right, but others nonetheless).
OK. So then last week Paul put on a sweater that he hasn't worn for a long time (obviously, because...). He didn't even decide to wear it; he was just trying it out, maybe making sure that he still wasn't too fond of the thing. Folded and tucked very neatly in its pocket, hid that very cute shirt. Now I know that I was the one who unscrupulously 'borrowed' the sweater and then placed my favorite shirt in the pocket. The story surrounding it's new temporary home is a mystery to me. My description of finding the shirt would not contain the words overwhelming, bittersweet, or beautiful, but boy was I happy to see it. Yay favorite shirt!

Post Post

Ocracacti, originally uploaded by apkoski.

The other day (as an attempt in procrastination) I posted a small lot of some of my pre-Flickr favorites. Included are pictures from beach & mountains vacations, and from our old home, 'hood, and town.
It's nice to display these b/c I've fallen behind on my scrapbooking (gasp!), so only the C drive has been enjoying the photos. Ah, the convenience of digital photography.

Stockholder

Grandma's Aprons, originally uploaded by apkoski.

For my birthday my grandma mailed me a bunch of her & her mother's old aprons. Earlier last summer I received a box full of my mom's and grandmas' sewing patterns from my sister.
It's a wonderful thing, becoming a family-recognized sewer/crafter, though I haven't exactly made a plan for the collections yet. Do I wear the aprons or preserve their delicate heritage? If not, should I display them somehow? As for the patterns, I'm sifting through and choosing a couple to try. I've already set aside a women's smock pattern (that happens to have a matching 'child' size pattern). Funny, the size I'm cutting out is 12 bigger than the courtesy sizes I purchase at stores. Wow, we (21st century Americans) are huge!
I guess an update will be in order when I get there. Wish me many hours of happy stitching this year!

Fresh

Coasters, originally uploaded by apkoski.

Nothing signifies the advancement of time like an announcement of passing of the president who was in office at my birth. It cries, "you're no spring chicken now!" The last swift kick in the pants I received was back in 1998. I graduated, turned 23, got booted off my parent's insurance plan and donation list, and watched a new year turn over within 2 weeks. Welcome to the cruel, cruel, world, baby. I skated without health insurance for about 6 months until my dad found out and "highly recommended" that I purchase a plan.

Even though last week I read in "Glamour" magazine that 68% of us don't plan to make resolutions for '07 (it's no longer cool, you know), I can't help feeling some renewed direction around this time of year. The spices/cleaning supplies 'Stock Up" list is on the fridge, and I'm formulating a garden & sewing 'to do' agenda in my head. I'm also starting to organize a race training plan, and preparing for the final countdown toward a campus wellness fair (Living in Balance) for which I'm co-organizing.

But that's not all, folks. No, this year is going to be a big one. A "make-or-break," as they say. And not one of those, "This will be the year that I'm going to..." Nope. Something will happen. No "Willpower" needed.

The big deal is that I'm performing thesis research for the next 2 terms, and then planning to graduate in June. Yahoo! That means I have to once again figure out what to do with my life. Please tread lightly on this topic. I'll be sure to tell everyone when I figure it out.
Well, I thought I had a nice list of biggies, but I guess that's it. Happy New Year, everyone!

Happy birth-day to me!

Thank you everyone for remembering my less-than-graceful entrance into my mid-thirties (31) during such a busy, stressful, and wonderful time of year. This morning I am longingly admiring my nice collection of gifts (wrapped in non-Christmas paper, to boot!), but have been fairly warned of the consequences of getting busted napping amongst a pile of torn paper and ribbon bits, wearing a chocolate schmear chin. Can't wait 'till this evening!

Thank you Paul, for making me feel so very special on my birthday, a day that you have successfully excavated out from within the Christmas vortex.
Love you,
Anne

8 Things

1. Take that, USPS! I endured the line out the door to mail all 21 pounds of packaged gifts under the stupid Parcel Post deadline (12/13), uninsured b/c I'm cheap. Has anyone really won?

2. What does your t-shirt say?

3. More consumerism. That Blog I posted about Super Girl -- yes, she's still super -- I faltered on my own "thoughtful gift" rule. If you say that something would sure be a nice gift for someone, let's face it, that someone is yourself! I'll shamefully admit in hindsight that I would love to receive any item found here at Mighty Goods. Pitiful.

4. Upon self-assessment, it turns out I've got a little Vata imbalance. Luckily, my holiday eating behavior has been accommodating the Ayruveda recommendations, which include the avoidance of Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, red meat, and saffron; and the inclusion of all dairy, oils and fats, oats, the 'holiday spices' (cinnamon, ginger, clove, cardamom, etc), natural sweeteners, oranges, and squash, to name a few.

5. Check out "important stuff." http://bookandpaper.org/ Creative & inspiring.

6. Paul is Super too! An hour ago he finished brewing a yummy looking porter in the cold with a cold. "It better be good," he said. That was after he made 2 loaves of Puula (another 5-hr. affair).

7. The Dr. Seuss tree lives on! This year I finally made a tree skirt this year that would accommodate a tree with a 24 x 18" 'stand.' On it hangs all the little homemade crafty ornaments that we, our nieces, nephews, and grandparents have made. No lights yet, but there's still time. The 'trees' you see are (1) this year's, (2) 2002 with Gatsby, & (3) 2004 @ night.

8. Um... time to make my new favorite treat!

Look What you Made me Do!

Well now I've done it. I opened up the Ghirardelli chocolate chips bag without a baking plan. It had something to do with that apron & recipe challenge I did last month. Yesterday, the lot was published, and boy were there some yummy holiday treats in there. I especially liked the leftover Thanksgiving pie and the spice cookie recipes. I entered my Grandpa Patterson's Million Dollar Fudge. Mmmmm-mm! I wonder if it should be renamed "Billion Dollar Fudge," with inflation and all.
Oh, by the way, I made that apron out of a flour sack towel, and that's only half of it (the towel). So, I have a whole other apron, ready to be worn. And I can't get my hubby to wear it. Anyone... anyone?

$1,000,000 Fudge

  • 4-1/2 C. Sugar
  • 1 Can Evaporated Milk
  • 1/8 Pound Butter
  • 1-3/4 C. Miniature Marshmallows
  • 1 lb. Chocolate Stars
  • 12 oz. Chocolate Chips
  • 1 C. Chopped Nuts
  • 1 T. Vanilla
Combine sugar, milk, & butter in a big heavy pan. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly. Boil for 5 minutes. Remove from fire & add remaining ingredients and stir only until all are melted. Pour into a buttered 9X13 pan and allow to cool at room temp. (about 2 hours) before cutting. Store cut pieces in refrigerator.

Super Girl alert

I heard an interesting article on NPR this morning about unique web shopping experiences that I had to share (plus I'm supposed to be studying, so...)! The woman, Margaret Mason, has a Blog called Mighty Goods, and she's found the neatest stuff! Mostly it's small-biz. artist and crafter goods, but lot of other fun items as well. She suggests and links to some of my haunts:
On top of that, Margaret has a book about Blogging that looks pretty interesting, and a personal Blog. I hope this lady feels special, getting dedicated a whole post and everything. My mind was in the right place @ the right time, I think. That reminds me, I need to re-up with NPR.
Okay, it's Final's week. Gotta go.
